Board Games

Any folk here into Board-Games? I personally am a fan of the following:

This bottom one is Alien Frontiers, which my friend got me as he invested in it on Kickstarter. It's really great- rather inspiring to see something like this which is so cool come to life via Kickstarter since most board game publishers wouldn't want you to make something with so many pieces because then they would say its too heavy and not cost-effective for shipping, etc...

I also dig Settlers of Catan, but I havent played in a while. I like Carcassonne a bit more for some reason. I even made my own "fan expansions" for it. I guess board games and pie-making is how I survive the Nordic-Winters but I'm well due for playing some sort of show with some sort of band... *sigh*.

  • I'm a big risk fan as well as stratego. Trying to learn Catan. Chess and Go are my go to games.

  • frodusfrodus November 2010

I must learn Go. Rev– please make videos like Alan Watts talking about Zen in the woods.

  • There's already numerous hilarious "how to play Go" videos online. I'm posting from my cell phone so I can't link right now, but there's a ridiculous 2 part vid on youtube ripped from a vhs tape. Then there are actual useful ones that show how to solve problems and all.

Board games are a splendid way to spend the doldrums of winter.  Some of my favorites include: Acquire, Empire Builder, Shadows over Camelot and the aforementioned Catan and Carcassonne.

  • frodusfrodus November 2010

@Le_Vainqueur - Are there any Carcassonne expansions you enjoy?

  • le_vainqueurle_vainqueur November 2010

Just Inns and Cathedrals, and the River that I think comes with the newer versions.  I don't actually own the game, have only played with friends.  I think I would go for the Big Box if I decide to buy it when I'm not spending most of my capital on finishing up school.

my wife and family are known to throw down on some Carcassonne or Settlers, but the real game at our house is (an outdated version of) Risk.

We also frequently play a hilarious game about winning electoral votes called Landslide, that you win by being manipulative. It's out of print and out of date but xtreme fun.

I want to make a Frodus boardgame about the conglomerate, a game of business corruption and high-stakes intrigue at a secretive software company in 1993!

  • "I guess board games and pie-making is how I survive the Nordic-Winters"

ohoho, harsh Nordic winters draggin' ye down, eh? Well, it is a tough thing--truly only something for the toughest of men only!

    *ahem*

But I'm quite a fan of Cluedo Super Sleuth, always enjoy taking a quick game of that ol' thing.

However, that's the only board game I've played in years. I remember having played Risk, Catan and Hættuspil, this Icelandic board game, and enjoying all of them, but I can't quite remember any of them properly so it's hard to say...

I'd all be for a Frodus game, though!

  • frodusfrodus November 2010

Hahaha.. yes, I am a softy!

Yah- Frodus game, what would it entail!? I'm actually working on another board game right now involving pyramids and stuff but after that is done I perhaps will start on some sort of Frodian game!

  • I can't figure out how to make it work, but I picture the game taking place in a computer terminal.  Like you're going through the FCI's computer system, and there will be areas like c:\ and a:\ to explore for what token thing you're trying to find.

Yeah, don't play enough board games to be much more help than that...  :/

  • frodusfrodus November 2010

Yah- a networky game but played on a board would be funny- digital goes analog!

I just played a train-building game "Ticket to Ride" tonight– gave me some ideas actually for Frodian game-mechanics!

  • frodusfrodus December 2010

I've started game testing with some actual guys that went to game-design school here, pretty excited. Though its not he Frodus oriented game, if anything this is kind of like a Triobelisk themed game but it feels a little bit like Carcassonne meets an exploring a dungeon game. Kinda neat so far... I'll keep you all posted, once we get the kinks worked out and then into phase 2 with the art and prototyping i believe we will be putting it up on Kickstarter!

  • math January 2011

Well, i suppose there would be a wild card/ x-factor called The Sasquatch, fulfilling a catan-esque robber function.

  • math January 2011

we are getting heavily into the game PANDEMIC, which will frustrate and control you.

it's a cooperative game - you vs. the board, but there are always a million things to be on the lookout for and an expansion that only makes the mutations and virulent diseases more difficult to contain. a real good time, with no worries about somebody's spirit being crushed by another human.

  • frodusfrodus January 2011

I saw that recently— I will have to try it out! Very "now" of a game with the topic and all. I played a ridiculously complex and featured loaded game Arkham Horror which was everyone vs. the board. Intense.

  • sasquatch January 2011

we just played Arkham Horror last night!  it was my second time and I felt pretty good about the rules.  pretty sure we did everything right.  however, the 5 of us took 4 hours to win and we started at midnight!  it was definitely up there with the most nerdy things I've ever done.  also, board games are pretty mentally stimulating so I had trouble falling asleep.  or was it just the HORROR?

  • math March 2011

just began playing Puerto Rico. The complexity and flow are really supreme. Recommended, even with the hype!

  • frodusfrodus March 2011

whoa... will check it! I just got City of Thieves, haven't played it yet.. looks cool!
